Academics have taught medicine in Iasi since 1879. Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Iasi is the successor of the former Faculty of Medicine of Iasi, whose foundation was initiated in 1860 and completed during the reign of Carol I in the year 1879. This public medical university bears the name of Grigore Teodor Popa, a former prominent professor and intellectual, forerunner of neuroendocrinology. The University educates more than 13000 undergraduate and postgraduate students at 4 Faculties: General Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Medical Bioengineering.
The positive image our institution enjoys abroad pertains to the continuously growing share of international citizens among the students who choose the University as their Alma Mater. The rich diversity of its student body (over 2500 international students coming from 75 countries) is important to its mission of educating outstanding health care professionals for the multicultural world of the 21st century.
Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Iasi has been acknowledged as the member of an elite group of the best 12 “universities of advanced research and education” from Romania and has been positively assessed in various rankings (Times Higher Education, U-Multirank, URAP, Shanghai ARWU). Also worth noting is the fact that the Medical University of Iasi has been awarded WFME Recognition Status in 2020. In in our continuous efforts to implement a modern strategic management and reinforce our capacity for change, we went through two institutional evaluation assessments (IEP), one in 2012 and the other in 2016, in which the European University Association (EUA) team has concluded that our university „is a well-established institution of high national and international reputation” and that it „can build on its success to continue its positive development”.
