Deeply steeped in ancient legends and fierce national pride, Lithuanian has civic roots that reach back more than 1000 years. In its heyday in the 14th century, it was the largest state in Europe, extending from the Baltic to the Black sea. Annexed by the Soviet Union in 1944, the Lithuanian people fought hard to maintain their unique national identity. Since they declared independence in 1991, Lithuania has been one of the most stable of the former USSR states.
In Lithuania the academic year starts in September and ends in mid-June and is divided into two semesters – spring and autumn. Students can opt to study full-time or part-time. Study in Lithuania university are offered in three cycles: the first cycle is undergraduate (Bachelor), the second cycle is graduate (Master, and/or specialised professional studies), and the third one is postgraduate (Doctoral; residency; postgraduate in the Arts).
As part of the European Union, Lithuania’s universities are demonstrative of the high standards of higher education belonging to the area. With just over 50 universities and colleges around the country, its education tradition is one of the oldest in Eastern Europe, dating back to 1579 with the establishment of Vilnius University in the nation’s capital of Vilnius.

There are various opportunities for the financing of studies in Lithuania. Funding may be granted by the state of Lithuania, Higher Education institution or it is possible to get a scholarship under international programmes. Each Higher Education institution also offers scholarships from its own funds to students who satisfy the specified requirements. Students, lecturers and researchers from foreign higher education and research institutions may also apply for state-funded scholarships for Vilnius University or other institutions.
