The European Union (EU) is the economic and political union of 27 Member States with a population of 470 million. Together, the EU has built a zone of stability, democracy and sustainable development while maintaining cultural diversity, tolerance and individual freedom. In 2012, the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for advancing the goals of peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe. The EU is the world's largest trading bloc, and the world's largest source and destination of foreign direct investment. Collectively, the EU and its Member States are the largest donors of Official Development Assistance (ODA), providing more than half of ODA globally.

The 27 Member States of the EU (in protocol order) are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden.

Erasmus+, or Erasmus Plus, is the European Union (EU) funded programme for education, training, youth and sport.

The EU provides Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) scholarship opportunities for master's degree students.

WHAT is Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) course?

§   EMJM is an  integrated master's course delivered by a Consortium of higher education institutions from different countries in Europe and beyond which lead to the award of mutually recognised joint, double or multiple master's degree. The European Union (EU) provides full scholarships to selected students to pursue EMJM courses.

§   A consortium is a group of at least three higher education institutions from three different European countries which has been selected by the European Commission (EC) – the executive body of the EU – to offer an EMJM courses.

§   EMJM awardees will be able to study at least two different universities in different countries throughout the course of their studies.

§   An EMJM leads to the award of a recognised joint, double or multiple degree(s):

è  Double or multiple degrees (i.e. at least two degree certificates issued by two higher education institutions of the consortium)

§   An EMJM course consists of 60, 90 or 120 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits at master level covering from one to two academic years.

§   The EMJM courses covers a wide range of academic disciplines: agricultural and forestry sciences, business studies and management, communication and information, education and teacher training, engineering and technology, humanities, law etc.

§  Has completed a bachelor’s degree (first degree), or be in your last year of bachelor studies, before the enrolment deadline in the EMJM courses.

WHAT does the scholarship cover?

a.     Tuition fees and insurance amounting to EUR 9,000 per year.

b.     A monthly allowance for the entire duration of the EMJM study programme amounting to € 1,400 per month to cover living allowance and transportation costs.

QUICK STEPS to apply for an Erasmus+ Scholarship

Step #1

1.      Applicants interested in an Erasmus+ Scholarship have to apply directly to the Consortium offering the particular EMJM programme of their choice. Visit the catalogue of EMJM courses available at bit.ly/ErasmusCatalogue to find over 200 Master’s programmes offering Erasmus+ scholarships.

2.      Select the EMJM course that you are interested in and access its website to obtain specific details such as the course description, prerequisites, the application process, forms, and deadlines. The applicant can select and apply for up to three EMJM courses.

3.      The application period is usually opened in September or October every year, for courses starting in September in the following academic year. Application procedures and deadlines vary between courses.

4.     Applicants will have to submit:

§   Filled application forms (to be downloaded from each EMJM course website).

§   Motivation letter.

§   Bachelor degree diploma.

§   English proficiency result (TOEF or IELTS, depending on the EMJM).

§   Curriculum Vitae, preferably using Europass format that is available in: https://europass.europa.eu/en

5.     Apply directly to the Consortium via its website and upload all required documents.

Step #2

Following the deadline for application, the Consortium will select applicants on the basis of the submitted documents. The Consortium proposes a list of successful applicants to the EC in Brussels, Belgium, for the final approval (by the end of February).

Step #3

The EC confirms the selection and assigns the grants to the Consortium of EMJM (by the end of March).

The Consortium will notify applicants if they have been accepted to the course and if they have been awarded a scholarship (usually in May).

Step #4:

Selected EMJM awardees depart to Europe in August or September. The EU Delegation organises a pre-departure event for EMJM awardees prior to their departure to Europe.
